Why dont we keep birds in a social setting when we do with Rabbits & Guinea pigs?
How come, within the pet trade, we now strive to keep Rabbits Guinea pigs & even Rats in social groups - understanding the importance of same species interaction for welfare, yet not with Parrots?
The research on Parrots is unfortunately lacking and the idea of keeping them in a social groups as pets has simply not tricklrd down sufficiently enough into the pet trade to create these demands.
Couple this with the misconceptions that parrots kept in pairs prevents them. from experiencing any kind of human bond & its easy to see why this idea is lagging behind.
Considering adding another parrot for a companion could help:
Ease some of the pressure for you to provide constant company & interaction.
Improve behaviour. Social animals (in particular prey animals) have evolved to feel a sense of safety in numbers. Having a companion of the sane species could help reduce fear & aggressive behaviour.
Watching social animals interact is incredibly rewarding and can also teach us a lot about natural behaviour!
