Why do Parrots Mimic?
Honestly, we still donโt exactly know why! ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Parrot social behaviour is incredibly complex & affected by a vast amount of external factors & variables ๐ฆ
What we do know ๐
๐Many behaviours displayed in captivity can be linked to some form of wild evolutionary advantage.
๐Research from studies have indicated Parrots could mimic because they actually have local dialects much like we have different regional accents & slang!
๐In the wild where there is likely to be several flocks within the same geographical area. Developing a unique language within your group helps parrots identify their mates & helps them locate their flock if they become astray.
๐If we relate this to our home environment, parrots typically view us as one of their โflockโ And they are exposed to numerous repetitive words & sounds on a daily basis.
๐The random sounds mimicked are most likely ones they associate most strongly with their flock (you).
๐Think about how often we use Alexa, telephones, light switches & kettles โ which seem to be some of the most commonly mimicked sounds!
