Is keeping Rabbits & Guinea pigs indoors really ‘better’ for them.

Is keeping Rabbits & Guinea pigs indoors really ‘better’ for them.

The pet market has definitely seen a shift away from hutches & towards Indoor kept Bunnies & Guinea pigs.

Our thoughts?

This move is definitely a positive step forward!

It is great for allowing more space, stimulation & interaction.

However the downside is it often means little exposure to full spectrum sunlight, less opportunities for natural foraging & a lack of good old fashioned fresh air, all of which offer multiple benefits.

If we think about it from a human perspective, we likely wouldn’t feel great staying indoors for long periods of time, even if we have plenty of space & things to do. We revel in the sun & fresh clean air & science has highlighted the range of benefits this has to us.

The solution?

While there is no ‘perfect’ solution & every individual circumstance is unique, we personally prefer accommodations which offer both ample space & are predominantly outdoors.

Options such as converted heated sheds with large runs attached. That way, animals have the space to perform more species typical behaviours & are able to regulate themselves more effectively.

Failing that, simply getting indoor animals outside in large spaces as much as possible when the weather permits Is also a good option ☀️
