Why do Parrots feather pluck?

I often get asked what I think causes self mutilation/feather plucking behaviour in Parrots.

The simple answer is there is no one cause & there is no one solution.

The only thing we do know is that it is a behaviour seen only in captivity & affects around 10% of parrots.

So what can we do about it? 🤔

If we think about human health (in particular mental), improving it usually involves making multiple lifestyles changes & an active effort to create new & better habits over a prolonged period of time.

All these little positive changes then add up & kick start other improvements within the body.

With parrots it is usually a rigorous process of elimination & exploring different options such as dietary changes & exposure to new & different stimulI.
